9/11

“Time is passing. Yet, for the United States of America, there will be no forgetting September the 11th. We will remember every rescuer who died in honor. We will remember every family that lives in grief. We will remember the fire and ash, the last phone calls, the funerals of the children.”
–George W. Bush (1946- ), 43rd President of the United States.

"There is no compromise possible with such people, no meeting of minds, no point of understanding with such terror. Just a choice: defeat it or be defeated by it. And defeat it we must."
-British Prime Minister Tony Blair

Eight years ago today we received a phone call mid-morning from someone from church about a special prayer meeting they'd decided to have because of what had happened. This individual assumed we knew, but we hadn't yet heard. We didn't watch TV much, and hadn't looked at the news yet that day even on the computer. But we sure did watch a lot of TV news the rest of that day.

I had seen a photo of the towers with smoke pouring out of them on the Internet that morning, on the page that came up when the web browser opened. I hadn't really given it any thought, however, and just barely a glance. It never occurred to me that it was a real photo of a real event. I didn't even look at the headline that probably accompanied it. It's rather hard to imagine now that I could just dismiss something like that as being something that belonged to the realm of fantasy. But that shows how things have changed, how my perspective has changed. I wouldn't overlook something like that today.

I remember standing atop one of those enormous buildings as a child, looking over at the other. It seems incredible that they are gone, and that it happened so suddenly. And all those people who were there that day.... it's beyond words.

That day affected us all. Today, even little children have the word "terrorist" in their vocabularies, and they have at least a vague understanding of what it means.

May God bless America. May America stand for what is right. May God also help those in the armed forces, and those making important decisions in governing. May He help us who believe in Him, too, in making wise decisions daily and spreading truth in a troubled world. Problems in the creation are best solved with the help of the Creator.

"What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?...Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?... in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us." Romans 8:31, 35, 37

"It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes." Psalm 118:8-9
